Every family photoshoot tells a story — your story. That’s why, before every session, all my clients complete a short but powerful pre-shoot questionnaire.
It helps me understand your family dynamic, who’s close with who, who’s shy, who’s energetic, and what moments will matter most to you.
By the time we meet in person, I already have a beautiful blueprint of your family in my mind.
But no matter who I’m photographing, there are 8 essential shots I always try to capture in every family photoshoot. These moments bring laughter, connection, emotion, and energy — and together, they create a gallery full of forever memories.
Let’s dive in…
1. Siblings, Siblings, Siblings
I always begin every family session with siblings. Young children bring a joy and lightness that sets the tone beautifully — it becomes a warm-up for the whole family.
I capture:
All siblings together
Different sibling combinations
Individual portraits
These early moments help everyone relax and get comfortable.
2. Mum & Dad Time
Once the kids are warmed up, it’s time for Mum and Dad.
I’ll ask the kids to stand behind me while Mum and Dad have a cuddle, a squeeze, or even a quick smooch — which always sends the little ones into fits of giggles.
These moments remind everyone that the foundation of this family began right here.
3. Individual Portraits
Every family member deserves their own moment.
I take individual portraits of each person — whether or not they choose them at their viewing appointment is completely up to them, but having the option is wonderful.
These portraits are timeless treasures (and often become favourites!).
4. Kids Running Toward Me
This is always a fun one!
I ask the kids to run towards me while the parents look on in the background.
It’s perfect for:
Getting high-energy kiddos moving
Creating natural smiles
Capturing personalities
Sometimes a few parents join in too — and it’s always hilarious!
5. Don’t Forget the Adult Kids
In generational sessions, we often focus on grandchildren — but the adult children are just as important.
They were once the little ones themselves.
I always make sure to capture the grown-up siblings together, laughing and reconnecting like old times.
6. The Classic Group Shot
Whether sitting or standing, the full family group shot is a non-negotiable.
These are often the images chosen for:
Wall art
Albums
Large statement frames
They’re the heart of the session — everyone, together, in one beautiful moment in time.
7. All the Cuddles
Connection is EVERYTHING in my sessions.
Every combination of family members gets a cuddle shot — parents with kids, grandparents with grandkids, siblings with siblings.
These images show the emotion and love that makes your family uniquely yours.
8. Candid Moments at the End
By the end of the session, everyone is relaxed, comfortable, and enjoying themselves.
This is where the magic happens.
The candid, unscripted moments.
The walking, playing, exploring, laughing.
The real “this is us” memories — the ones you’ll treasure most.
